Farewell 2021
Quality, Consequences and the Construction Industrial Complex (part 307).
It has been a strange year, but for me, 2021 has certainly been better than 2020. I hope this was the case for everyone.
I love being part of the property industry and want to keep going as long as I can add value. I have been reflecting on the property industry and my place in it recently. My career arc can be summarized in the diagram below.
This is not a good or bad thing, it is just the way it is. The property industry is complex and slow to change. I heard a business commentator talk about industry leaders failing to adapt and change. She asked:
- Why didn’t Avis, invent UBER?
- Why didn’t Blackberry invent the iPhone?
I ask:
- Why hasn’t the property industry developed low cost housing solutions and construction methods?
- Who will disrupt the property industry?
My conclusion is that, it is only a matter of time before someone disrupts how you and industry leaders earn a living and make money. With developments in technology, new generations of professionals committed to innovation, the demand for high performance buildings plus the looming end of the pandemic, I am super optimistic about the next year and beyond.
Thank you all who support the Edifice Complex Podcast and read the Blog. Robert and I will try our best to bring more hidden and not so hidden stars of our industry to your attention in 2022.
Also, big thank you to the AESG leadership and team for their openness and forward thinking. I am really enjoying working at AESG and trying to make a difference.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
