Women in Engineering
Quality, Consequences and the Construction Industrial Complex (part 150).
The Edifice Complex Podcast wants to explore the issues women in engineering face and how they can be addressed in mutually beneficial ways. The goal is to do this by “walking in the shoes” of someone living this experience and coaching where we can. Therefore, the Edifice Complex podcast is seeking an applicant as described below.
Short Version
The Edifice Complex Podcast is looking for a “woman in engineering” to mentor for 1 year while sharing the experience on two podcast episodes.
If you want to apply there are some rules:
- You are a female engineer or technologist in the USA, Canada or UAE property design and construction industry
- You should be a final year undergraduate or between 0 to 5 years post graduate
- You are willing to share your experiences over two Edifice Complex podcast episodes
To apply, send us (admin@edificecomplexpodcast.com) your 1 page CV plus 300 words max or a short video on why you chose to be an engineer or technologist and your long term career ambitions.
Please note, only short listed candidates will be contacted. We are targeting August 1st 2018 to select a final candidate.
Long version
The issue:
Women are under represented in engineering and the property design & construction industry in particular. Ask yourself, how many women do you interact with professionally on a day to day basis? How many women hold “high office” in engineering and construction firms?
There is much talk about woman in STEM but this is a misleading label, in my experience, 80% of women in STEM are in “technology” and/or “computer science”. The numbers of women in actual mechanical, electrical, civil, structural, architectural and environmental engineering are low. I base this observation on people I meet while working on projects.
In my opinion, the property design and construction industry is unattractive and intimidating to women. It is full of macho business culture, golfing, back slapping executives and many men hiding their incompetence or laziness with aggression.
Our intervention:
We will form a Mastermind Group to promote the property industry in general and mentor women in particular. The mastermind group will consist of:
- Robert Bean
- The Building Whisperer – yes, I like talking about myself in the third person, makes me feel like Batman!
- Support from our personal networks
This is not about pushing women into something they do not want to do, nor is it about supporting some of the fashionable hashtags. It is about supporting and mentoring women who have already made an overt choice for engineering and need support and guidance.
We will help bridge the gap between study and starting a career or planning a new career path. IMHO, university’s and college’s do a poor job preparing students for the real world or work.
What do we offer:
- Monthly coaching calls (max 1 hour) on Skype;
- Ability to e-mail or call us individually for coaching during working hours;
- Industry advice & guidance;
- Support to help build confidence;
- Access to our networks if we deem it necessary;
- Reviews and advice on CV’s;
- Interview preparation;
- Reviews of any public facing blogs or papers, not help with university or college work;
- Exposure via two Edifice Complex podcast episodes;
- Advice on further education, personal branding and career development.
What do we DO NOT offer:
- Job opportunities;
- Direct help with college or university work or exams;
- Unlimited access to ourselves;
- Anything other than coaching and mentoring.
Who is to for?
- Someone who really wants coaching;
- A female final year undergraduate or between 0 to 5 years post graduate
- Women from USA, Canada or the UAE;
- Women with passion for engineering and impacting the property industry;
- Women looking for support and encouragement in engineering.
Who is it not for?
- Time wasters & social media trolls;
- People with poor work ethic looking for an easy ride;
- “Show Boaters” i.e. this will not be an engineering version of the “Khardasians”.
